Ms. Truss points to despair as the impetus for this book, despair over the impact of technology on our language. The use of the e-mail and instant message as primary forms of communication has created a nearly punctuation-free language that recalls the scriptio continua of the Romans. When punctuation is present in these communiqués, it is often in the form of the loathsome emoticon.
I thoroughly enjoyed Eats, Shoots & Leaves, and I am not a stickler for punctuation. All you sticklers out there are nodding your heads vigorously and smiling knowingly as you mark up this review with your little red pens and pencils, I'm sure. And despite your vise-like grasp on the subject, I would recommend giving Ms. Truss's little book a read. You may learn something, and you'll certainly have a laugh along the way.
