The Manchurian Candidate
The book is a lot like this review - you have to read a good bit of it before you find out what is really going on. I still haven't even told you what the book is about, and all I talked about for the first half was my book club. Condon's story is basically about some U.S. soldiers, brainwashing, assassinations and political intrigue set against the backdrop of the Cold War. Believe me, when the plot and character are the main things a book has going for it, you don't want the reviewer to ruin the surprises for you.

My recommendation is this: If you like good drama, check it out. Assuming you have the discipline to get through the initially frustrating style of writing, I would be surprised if you didn't find this to be a wickedly shocking and satisfying thriller.
