Born in 1971, Standard Schaefer grew up in Houston, Texas but at age 19 went into exile, moved to Los Angeles and attended Occidental College where he allegedly received a BA in Comparative Literature in 1994. He lived in Los Angeles for 13 years, receiving a Masters in Professional Writing from the University of California in 1998. He is an independent journalist, a free-lance writer, and a contributor to the political journal www.counterpunch.org.
Occasionally he teaches creative writing, most recently in the Graduate Writing Program at Otis College. His literary criticism and reviews have appeared in many magazines including Boston Review, The New Review of Literature, The Washington Review, Aufgabe, Interim, Fence, Rain Taxi and the anthology The World in Time and Space (Talisman Books, 2002).
His poetry has been appeared in New American Writing, Fence, Non, Aufgabe, and Ribot. His work has been anthologized in the United States, France and Italy. His fiction has appeared in X-Connect, Epoch, and Rosebud. He co-edited the literary journals Rhizome, Ribot and edited the Selected Poems of Paul Vangelisti (Marsillio, 2001). His first book of poetry Nova was selected for the National Poetry Series in 1999 and published by Sun and Moon Books.
His second book Water and Power will appear in early 2005 from Agincourt Press. His has also published a series of interviews with left-wing economists attacking the neo-liberal model. His currently the non-fiction editor of The New Review of Literature. He, his wife, and two beagles have recently relocated to San Francisco, CA where he is working on a Masters in Media Studies.
