Birth:

Kelly Link was born in Miami, Florida in 1969.

Kelly Link's Background:

Kelly Link, the eldest of three children, was born in Miami and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where she attended Greensboro Day School. She received an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York and her MFA from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Link has taught writing at numerous schools and workshops around the country. She currently teaches a short story writing course at Smith College, near the home she shares with her husband in Northampton, Massachusetts.

In 2000, Kelly Link and her husband, Gavin Grant, founded Small Beer Press, a small publishing house, "committed to publishing short story collections and novels by authors we feel are slipping through the cracks."

Kelly Link's Writing:

Kelly Link's writing is a mixture of science fiction and fantasy, horror and myth. Her stories vary widely, from macabre fairy tales to those tinged more subtly with magically realistic elements.

Link is the author of three collections of short stories: Stranger Things Happen (2001), which was a Salon Book of the Year and a Village Voice favorite; Magic for Beginners (2006), which won the Locus Award for the best short story collection; and Pretty Monsters (2008).

One of my favorite Kelly Link short stories is The Faery Handbag, which you can read in its entirety here.

Kelly Link Short Story Collections:

  • Stranger Things Happen (2001)
  • Magic For Beginners (2006)
  • Pretty Monsters (2008)
