Joshua Ferris grew up in both Florida and in Illinois, where he attended high school in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove. After receiving graduating from the University of Iowa with degrees in English and Philosophy, Ferris went to work at a Chicago advertising firm for several years before leaving to earn his MFA in writing at the University of California - Irvine.

In 2007, Joshua Ferris published his debut novel, Then We Came to the End, a satire set in an advertising agency with a colorful cast of characters clinging to their jobs under the threat of layoffs. Then We Came to the End met with rave reviews, was a finalist for the National Book Award, and received the 2007 PEN/Hemingway Award.
Ferris' follow-up, The Unnamed, was released in January 2010, It's a powerful story of one man's struggle with an anomolous disease whose strange effects threaten to destroy his life. His third novel, To Rise Again at a Decent Hour, tells the story of a loner unable to properly connect with anyone, mostly as a result of his atheism, until a bizarre series of events opens his eyes in a way he least expects.
