Yiyun Li Birth:

Yiyun Li was born in Beijing, China in 1972.

Yiyun Li Background and Writing:

Yiyun Li grew up in Beijing, the daughter of a phyysicist father and a teacher mother. She received her B.S. from Peking Universtiy before moving to the United States in 1996 to pursue an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

She has published stories in The New Yorker, Best American Short Stories, and elsewhere. Yiyun Li's debut story collection, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, won the Frank O'Conner International Short Story Award, PEN/Hemingway Award, Guardian First Book Award, and California Book Award for first fiction. Her first novel, The Vagrants (2009) won a gold medal of California Book Award.
Yiyun Li's second collection of short stories, Gold Boy, Emerald Girl (2010), was selected as a Strory Prize finalist, and in 2010, Li was named one of the New Yorker's "20 Under 40" fiction writers worth watching.

She lives in Oakland, California with her husband and two sons. She teaches at the University of California, Davis and serves as an editor for Brooklyn based literary magazine, A Public Space..
