The Good, The Bad, The Overated

Saturday December 27, 2008

In parting from the usual, Citizen Reader has posted a list of the worst books of 2008, which happens to include The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (one that we included on our Best of 2008 list).

In the spirit of furthering the discussion, I'll nominate Philip Roth's Indignation as the most-overated book of 2008, though because I haven't read Indignation, this nomination is based on hearsay (or possibly heresy).

I’m glad we can agree to disagree on Edgar Sawtelle.

Also? I DID read Indignation, and I feel bad I forgot to add it to the list of Worst books. Don’t waste your time. The only thing it had going for it was that it was short. But then, Philip Roth is firmly in the camp of my “authors whose appeal I don’t understand.”
