The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski

Monday November 3, 2008

David Wroblewski's debut novel, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, chosen by Oprah's Book Club in September, is according to John Formy-Duval, "far and away the best debut novel of the year. David Wroblewski creates a beautifully imagined world filled with people who grapple with real issues."

Edgar Sawtelle lives on a Wisconsin farm with his parents and the dogs they breed. Born mute, Edgar communicates mainly by sign language and mainly with his own dog and best friend, Almondine. Life is good - prior to the arrival of Edgar's Uncle Claude, after which the story proceeds like Hamlet in Wisconsin.
