R.I.P. David Foster Wallace

Monday September 15, 2008

Author David Foster Wallace who had for years suffered from depression died in his home of an apparent suicide on Friday. Wallace was most famously the author of the epic masterwork, Infinite Jest (1996). More recent work includes Oblivion (2004), a collection of short stories and Remember the Lobster (2005), a collection of essays.

Wallace’s lexicologically complex choices and stylistic experimentation (which sometimes included pages of footnotes) made him an author both loved and hated. If you haven’t yet read him, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Oblivion, or if you’re feeling ambitious, heave a copy of Infinite Jest over your shoulder and hide out for a few weeks.
