Free e-book Reader for iPhone and iPod Touch

Thursday August 14, 2008

Speaking of the Amazon Kindle, e-book readers, and how nothing will ever really replace the experience of holding an actual book in my hands, I just now downloaded and installed the free Stanza e-book reader for iPhone to my iPod Touch.

Stanza's e-book reading software connects seamlessly to Feedbooks, a service that feeds public domain books - everything from Jane Austen to Jules Verne. Right now, I have Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Grimm's Fairy Tales, The Art of War, and H.G. Wells' The Time Machine in my Stanza library. In all honesty, I don't really believe that I'll be reading these books on my iPod Touch, but it seems like something good to have available for the long line at the post office or some similar situation.

Stanza boasts a wonderfully simple interface that allows for quick and easy downloads and intuitive touch-browsing through the titles in your library, and I expect Feedbooks will continue to rapidly expand their offering of titles.

The bottom line? Stanza will deservedly rise to be one of the most popular free applications available through the iTunes store. Read more at Wired.com.

Stanza is great if you only want to read text from free books. But it will not allow any artwork and cannot read purchased eBooks. Most reviewers either omit these facts or simply overlook them.

Those are severe limitations if you want to read something besides Grimm’s Fairy Tales, The Art of War or Robinson Crusoe. eReader is also free on the App site and has a much wider capability for accepting e-material. This includes artwork and paid eBooks.

I actually like using Stanza, but for me it is only good for free books. Try to purchase a book that has a price tag in USD ($) with a credit card in the UK……Nope.

Frustrating to say the least.
