A Voyage Long and Strange by Tony Horwitz

Sunday May 25, 2008

Gonzo-historian Tony Horwitz (Blue Latitudes, Confederates in the Attic) finds the national memory of the founding of the U.S. woefully incomplete and sets out to fill in the gaps.

Following the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist on an historical path as he meets colorful characters from Santo Domingo to Newfoundland, we learn about the roles played by the Vikings, the French, and most notably, the Spanish conquistadors, all of whom preceded the English in settling the North American continent.
