LibriVox, Giving Voice to Books

Thursday August 31, 2006

As the popularity of audiobooks has surged, there are a number of venues for purchasing recorded books in tape, cd, and download form. LibriVox is one of several recent collectives of audiobook enthusiasts who actually record and freely disseminate audio versions of literary works in the public domain, usually works copyrighted before 1923.

The name literally means "book voice," and LibriVox has given voice to more than 100 books and 200 short stories, plays, speeches, poems, and other documents. The audio books are created by amateur volunteers, so the recordings vary in quality.
