A Short Story in Tattoos
Saturday May 22, 2004
Shelley Jackson's latest story, "Skin," is a short 2, 095 word piece of fiction that's going to take a long time to publish. Termed "a mortal work of art" by the writer-artist, "Skin" is being tattooed one word at a time on 2,095 volunteers.
"I can't write a normal book. I'm not interested in that," Jackson told Jeff Douglas of the Associated Press ("Short Story Printed Only Through Tattoos," May 17, 2004).
"Skin" was first announced back in November (see "Why this new brand of fiction is a life sentence," The Guardian), and since then has been written up in The Village Voice, Newsweek, The Toronto Star, and a number of other periodicals internationally. Emails have poured in from would-be participants around the world.
Volunteers must get their word tattooed in a book font (Garamond, Bodoni, Times Roman...) and a photograph must then be sent to the author. As of January 6 of this year, 1600 of the 2095 words had been published.
